Rather than have the finished quilt blocks conform to their rectangle card shape, they are mounted into a square background. I had a concern that by not leaving some "breathing" space between these detailed appliques, the quilt would become a clutter of color without showing off the individual card designs.
This setting option also allowed space for an elaborate quilting design. Although, I am only in the process of marking this design onto the quilt top, I am eagerly anticipating getting the time to hand quilt the design and see just how it turns out.
